Indirect Talks with U.S. Limited to Nuclear File: Iran
WANA (Apr 13) – Amid speculation regarding the content of Iran-U.S. negotiations, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Tehran’s consistent stance, emphasizing that the talks are strictly limited to the nuclear issue and sanctions relief, with no other topics on the agenda.
Responding to reports about a draft proposal presented by the U.S., Baghai stated: “If we take the initial correspondence and the process that led to indirect talks in Muscat as our basis, there was no reference to any subject beyond the nuclear file.”
He stressed that the talks have proceeded in full alignment with official directives of the Islamic Republic and the frameworks defined by the country’s top authorities. “Iran’s position has been clear from the outset: the discussions are only about the nuclear issue and lifting sanctions. We will not engage beyond this framework.”
Regarding the venue for the upcoming round of talks, the spokesperson noted: “We are currently considering whether the next round will be held in Oman or another location. However, Oman’s mediating role will remain unchanged. In any case, the format will continue to be indirect and facilitated by Oman.”
Baghai also rejected rumors of direct negotiations with the U.S., calling them unfounded. “The negotiating team is following a policy of indirect talks. This decision is based on expert evaluations by the Foreign Ministry and past experience. Under current conditions, it is the most effective approach for achieving results.”
He added: “In an environment dominated by threats and pressure, direct negotiations are unlikely to yield constructive outcomes. This is not an ideologically driven choice, but one rooted in realism and experience.”
According to Baghai, at present, indirect negotiations remain the only approach under consideration by Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
